Hazare’s fast enters 2nd day; locals in his village observe bandh

RALEGAN SIDDHI Siddhi (Maha) : Social activist Anna Hazare’s hunger strike entered the second day on Thursday as he remained defiant on his demand for appointment of anti-corruption watchdogs at the Centre and in Maharashtra and resolution of farmers’ issues.
A bandh was also observed by locals in Hazare’s native Ralegan Siddhi village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district in support of his demands.
Hazare is sitting on a hunger strike in his village since Wednesday against “non-fulfilment” of assurances by the Centre and the Maharashtra government on the appointment of Lokpal and passage of the Lokayukta Act in the state.
The 81-year-old Army man-turned-activist has also been demanding appointment of Lokayuktas in states where such statutory anti-corruption watchdogs do not exist.
He has also been demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations on ways to address agrarian distress, besides some electoral reforms.
Locals of Ralegan Siddhi village issued a statement on Thursday to local tehsildar, as an official representative of the state government, to look into Hazare’s demands.
Doctors conducted a check-up of Hazare and asked his caretakers to monitor the activist’s condition closely.
“He is over 80 years’ old. He needs to be looked after,” the doctors told Hazare’s close aides.
Hazare had earlier declined to meet state government envoy and minister Girish Mahajan for talks over his demands.
However, Mahajan said on Wednesday that talks were going on with Hazare and his supporters.
“There will be some solution,” Mahajan, a confidant of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, told reporters in Nashik.
The anti-corruption crusader had earlier told PTI that he welcomed the Maharashtra Cabinet’s decision to bring the office of state chief minister under the ambit of Lokayukta.
“However, the strike will continue till the government fulfils promises they made before coming to power about passage of Lokayukta Act, appointment of Lokpal (at the Centre) and to tackle farmers’ issues,” he said.
Hazare had written a letter to Fadnavis Monday, saying he would launch the agitation in his village from Wednesday.
“It has been five years since the Lokpal Act was passed. Yet, the Narendra Modi government has not appointed Lokpal…Lokayukta Act has not been passed in Maharashtra for four years,” Hazare observed in his letter dated January 28.
The activist said Fadnavis had mediated when he had launched the agitation at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi in March last year. Hazare said he had withdrawn that agitation after the Centre assured in writing it would fulfil his demands.
“Nine months have passed, yet the demands have not been fulfilled,” he had said in the letter.
The Fadnavis Cabinet had on Tuesday decided to bring the office of chief minister under the purview of Lokayukta.
Hazare welcomed the government’s decision to set in motion the process to appoint Lokayukta, but said that does not mean he will not stage hunger strike. “The agitation will go on until the Act is in place,” he had said.
The Lokayukta is a statutory body that is empowered to probe complaints of abuse of position and corruption against public servants. (AGENCIES)

Cong’s Shafia Zubair wins Ramgarh poll in Rajasthan

JAIPUR : Congress candidate Shafia Zubair won the Ramgarh assembly poll in Rajasthan by defeating her nearest BJP rival Sukhwant Singh by a margin of 12,228 votes, officials said.
With this, Congress’s tally has increased to 100 in the 200-member Rajasthan assembly. Its ally – RLD- has one seat thus the government is in comfortable position.
Zubair got 44.77 per cent votes by securing 83,311 votes while Singh secured 71,083 votes, the officials of the Rajasthan election department said.
BSP candidate and former union minister Natwar Singh’s Son, Jagat Singh, was third. He secured 24,856 votes, they said.
In total, 20 candidates contested the Ramgarh election on January 28.

Political considerations shouldn’t derail proceedings of RS: Naidu to members

NEW DELHI : Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu Thursday appealed to leaders of various parties that their political considerations should not derail the proceedings of the House in the Budget Session.
Invoking the spirit and principles of republicanism, Naidu said it would be appropriate to ensure that the Budget Session sets an example, as its is the first session of Parliament in the 70th year of the Indian Republic.
The Budget Session is the last sitting of Parliament before the general elections.
“Legislatures are important pillars of our Republic through which the sovereignty of the people is ensured. I fondly hope that the spirit of Republic will guide all of us during this Session of Parliament,” he said.
Naidu made these remarks during an all-party meeting called by him on the first day of the Budget Session.
He said the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President and the Budget would constitute the main business before the House.
“Political considerations should not be allowed to derail the proceedings of the House and instead members should avail various opportunities to raise their points of view,” Naidu said.
He also urged all sections of the House to come to a broad understanding on the business of the Rajya Sabha to enable its smooth functioning.
About 35 ministers and leaders of various parties attended the meeting, including Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Narendra Singh Tomar, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, AIADMK leader Navneeth Krishnan, DMK leader Tiruchy Siva and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut were among those who were present at the meeting.
The parliament’s Budget Session which begun Thursday with Presidential address will conclude on February 13. The Union Budget will be tabled on February 1. (AGENCIES)

Apple busts Facebook for distributing data-sucking app

NEW YORK :Apple says Facebook can no longer distribute an app that paid users, including teenagers, to extensively track their phone and web use.
In doing so, Apple closed off Facebook’s efforts to sidestep Apple’s app store and its tighter rules on privacy.
The tech blog TechCrunch reported late Tuesday that Facebook paid people about USD 20 a month to install and use the Facebook Research app. While Facebook says this was done with permission, the company has a history of defining “permission” loosely and obscuring what data it collects.
“I don’t think they make it very clear to users precisely what level of access they were granting when they gave permission,” mobile app security researcher Will Strafach said Wednesday.
“There is simply no way the users understood this.”
He said Facebook’s claim that users understood the scope of data collection was “muddying the waters.”
Facebook says fewer than 5 per cent of the app’s users were teens and they had parental permission.
Nonetheless, the revelation is yet another blemish on Facebook’s track record on privacy and could invite further regulatory scrutiny.
And it comes less than a week after court documents revealed that Facebook allowed children to rack up huge bills on digital games and that it had rejected recommendations for addressing it for fear of hurting revenue growth.
For now, the app appears to be available for Android phones, though not through Google’s main app store.
Google had no comment Wednesday.
Apple said Facebook was distributing Facebook Research through an internal-distribution mechanism meant for company employees, not outsiders. Apple has revoked that capability.
TechCrunch reported separately Wednesday that Google was using the same privileged access to Apple’s mobile operating system for a market-research app, Screenwise Meter.
Asked about it by The Associated Press, Google said it had disabled the app on Apple devices and apologised for its “mistake.”
The company said Google had always been “upfront with users” about how it used data collected by the app, which offered users points that could be accrued for gift cards.
In contrast to the Facebook Research app, Google said its Screenwise Meter app never asked users to let the company circumvent network encryption, meaning it is far less intrusive.
Facebook is still permitted to distribute apps through Apple’s app store, though such apps are reviewed by Apple ahead of time.
And Apple’s move Wednesday restricts Facebook’s ability to test those apps — including core apps such as Facebook and Instagram — before they are released through the app store.
Facebook previously pulled an app called Onavo Protect from Apple’s app store because of its stricter requirements.
But Strafach, who dismantled the Facebook Research app on TechCrunch’s behalf, told the AP that it was mostly Onavo repackaged and rebranded, as the two apps shared about 98 per cent of their code.
As of Wednesday, a disclosure form on Betabound, one of the services that distributed Facebook Research, informed prospective users that by installing Facebook Research, they are letting Facebook collect a range of data.
This includes information on apps users have installed, when they use them and what they do on them.
Information is also collected on how other people interact with users and their content within those apps, according to the disclosure.
Betabound warned that Facebook may collect information even when an app or web browser uses encryption.
Strafach said emails, social media activities, private messages and just about anything else could be intercepted.
He said the only data absolutely safe from snooping are from services, such as Signal and Apple’s iMessages, that fully encrypt messages prior to transmission, a method known as end-to-end encryption.
Strafach, who is CEO of Guardian Mobile Firewall, said he was aghast to discover Facebook caught red-handed violating Apple’s trust.
He said such traffic-capturing tools are only supposed to be for trusted partners to use internally. Instead, he said Facebook was scooping up all incoming and outgoing data traffic from unwitting members of the public — in an app geared toward teenagers.
“This is very flagrantly not allowed,” Strafach said. “It’s mind-blowing how defiant Facebook was acting.” (AGENCIES)

Hindu temple vandalised in US

WASHINGTON : In a hate crime, a Hindu temple has been vandalised in the US state of Kentucky by miscreants who sprayed black paint on the deity and left a knife stabbed into a chair in the main hall.
The incident happened between Sunday night and Tuesday morning at the Swaminarayan Temple in the Louisville city.
According to local media report, vandalism resulted in deity image sprayed with black paint, broken windows, walls spray-painted with inappropriate messages and graffiti. A knife was stabbed in the chair, and cabinets were emptied.
The incident has sent shock waves through the Indian-American community in Louisville Kentucky.
Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
Condemning the incident of vandalism, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer called upon the city residents to stand up against this hatred.
“Anytime we see hatred or bigotry we will stand against it. The cowards who did this have only given our community more fuel and determination to embrace compassion, understanding, and each other,” Fischer said as he visited the vandalised temple Wednesday.
“Sometime between the end of services at the Swaminarayan Temple on Bardstown Road on Sunday and the time a repairman arrived on Tuesday morning, vandals broke into a window and vandalised spots throughout the building,” he said.
The vandalism of this temple, Fischer said is another example of the work “we still have to do as a city and a nation to make sure we live to our ideals of equality, of a country where everyone is treated with the respect we all deserve.”
Fischer said that the vandals wrote “repugnant messages of hate.”
“Regardless of what religion you are, this should not happen,” Raj Patel from the Swaminarayan temple said.
“We come here to worship. We should not have to turn our backs to see who is behind us, but we should be happy to come here and worship in peace,” he added.
Describing the desecration as “heartbreaking”, Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Steve Conrad told reporters that the police will provide additional security to the temple.
“What I’m here to do today is to assure everyone that attends this temple that we will do our best to find and hold accountable the person or persons who committed this vandalism and this hate crime,” Conrad said.
Kentucky State Representative Nima Kulkarni, the first Indian-American elected to the Kentucky General Assembly, said the vandalism was an “act of intimidation designed to weaken our faith and community”.
There has been a number of such incidents across the US in previous years.
In April 2015, a Hindu temple in north Texas has been vandalised with nasty images spray-painted on its walls.
In February 2015, Hindu temples in Kent and the Seattle Metropolitan area were also vandalised. (AGENCIES)

The Delhi High Court on January 11 had refused to quash the FIR lodged against Asthana on bribery allegations and set a 10-week deadline to complete the investigation.
The government on January 18, however, appointed Asthana as director of BCAS, India’s regulatory authority for civil aviation security. (AGENCIES)
